Hello everyone! I’m Dr. Mariusz Baniak, a chiropractor and founder of Salut Quiropràctica Terrassa. Today I’d like to invite you on a journey back in time to discover how chiropractic was born and evolved, a discipline that has changed the lives of millions of people around the world.
If you think chiropractic care is something modern, get ready to be surprised. Although it became established as a profession in the 19th century, the idea that the spine influences overall health has existed for thousands of years. So join me on this journey full of curiosities and key moments in the history of chiropractic care.
The First Steps: An Adjustment That Changed History
Our modern story begins in 1895 in Davenport, Iowa (USA), when Daniel David Palmer, an enthusiast of anatomy and natural healing, performed a spinal adjustment that would change history.
His patient, Harvey Lillard, had lost his hearing years earlier after feeling a sharp pop in his back while working in his workshop. Palmer examined his spine and found a vertebra out of place. With a precise manipulation, he managed to return the vertebra to its proper position. Shortly after, Lillard claimed to have regained part of his hearing.
This event led Palmer to delve deeper into the connection between the spine and the nervous system. His conclusion was revolutionary for its time: many diseases did not originate in the organs themselves, but rather in spinal problems that affected the function of the nervous system. Thus, chiropractic care was born as a discipline.
The Name and the Founding of the First Chiropractic School
The term “chiropractic” comes from the Greek words “cheir” (hand) and “praktikos” (practice), which translates as “practicing with the hands”. It was coined by Samuel Weed, a friend of Palmer’s who helped him define his discovery.
To share his knowledge, in 1897 Palmer founded the Palmer School of Chiropractic, the world’s first chiropractic school. However, the profession was not immediately accepted. In a world dominated by traditional medicine, the idea that diseases could be treated by adjusting the spine was viewed with skepticism.
The Expansion of Chiropractic and the Legacy of B.J. Palmer
Although Daniel David Palmer was the pioneer, his son Bartlett Joshua Palmer (B.J. Palmer) was the one who truly expanded chiropractic care. B.J. modernized the techniques, refined the adjustment methods, and began to research more deeply the connection between the spine and overall health.
Thanks to his leadership, chiropractic care became popular in the United States and eventually around the world. Despite facing legal and medical challenges, it managed to establish itself as a valid alternative within the health sciences.
Ancestral Roots: Beyond 1895
Although modern chiropractic was born in the 19th century, spinal manipulation is an ancient practice. Different ancient civilizations, from China to Greece, were already aware of the benefits of spinal adjustments.
- Chinese and Egyptian manuscripts dating back more than 4,000 years mention manual techniques to relieve back pain.
- Hippocrates, the father of medicine, stated that many diseases could be cured by observing and adjusting the spine.
This shows us that the spine has always been considered key to health, and modern chiropractic has simply perfected these ancestral practices.
The Recognition of Chiropractic in the 20th and 21st Centuries
Throughout the 20th century, chiropractic care evolved from being seen as an alternative practice to becoming a regulated discipline in many countries. In the United States, Canada, Australia, and many European countries, chiropractic care is a recognized and regulated health profession.
Today, chiropractors specialize in the treatment of:
✔️ Back and neck pain
✔️ Migraines and tension headaches
✔️ Postural problems
✔️ Stress and chronic fatigue
✔️ Sports injuries
Thanks to technology, modern chiropractors combine manual techniques with advanced tools such as digital X-rays and biomechanical analysis to provide more accurate diagnoses.
